SWIM MEETS 101

FAQ about what happens at a swim meet

  • Swim meets happen on Saturday and/or Sunday, and often last 3-4 hours
  • There is usually a 45minute to 1 hour warm-up, then the competition begins
  • Swimmers typically swim 2 to 3 events, and may sometimes also swim in a relay. However, your child may swim more or less events depending on ability & coaches decisions
  • BE ON TIME – swimmers are required to be on the pool deck at least 15 minutes before warm up.
    • Coaches must ”scratch” or remove swimmers from events if they are not present 30 minutes before the competition starts.
  • The Stingrays team participates in 3 types of meets: METRO LEAGUE meets, USA meets, TRAVEL meets
    • League Meets are open to all swimmers of any age and ability (designated MSL on the schedule)
    • Participation in USA meets is Coaches decision – based on multiple factors including ability, commitment, focus, and child’s interest
    • Travel meets (usually Washington DC in the winter and N. Carolina in the spring) are optional & open to all swimmers

What should your child bring?

  • 2 swim caps & 2 pairs of goggles (in case one breaks)
  • Their swimsuit!
  • A sweatshirt or swim parka – the waiting areas can be cold & drafty
  • 1-2 towels
  • A snack and water bottle
  • A beach chair for sitting (for some meets – coaches will advise if needed)

On arrival, your child should report to the pool deck (or the gym depending on location) and let a coach know they have arrived

NO PARENTS ARE ALLOWED ON THE POOL DECK DURING MEETS UNLESS THEY ARE VOLUNTEERING

  • Volunteer timers and other assistance are ALWAYS needed at meets – please speak to the coaches if you are interested in volunteering!
